How To Get More Bang For Your Hair Color Buck

Spring is a great time to make some hair changes. Maybe you’ve been wanting a new cut, or perhaps a new color is more your speed. But changing up your hair color, especially if it’s a major change, comes with some upkeep. Sometimes a lot of upkeep.

So what’s a girl to do when you want to make a change, but don’t want to spend all of your time (and money) in your colorist’s chair? She get’s creative! Here are some tips to extend the life of your hair color while still looking awesome.

1. Go for a gloss.

Having a tinted gloss applied over your natural color can let you experiment with a slightly richer shade, but without the commitment of a permanent color. A gloss will typically last six weeks, and fades out over time.

2. Balayage, baby.

Balayage, essentially hand-painted highlights, will allow your colorist to focus on the ends and gently fade the color up the length of your hair. This gives you a natural look and all but eliminates any lines at the roots.

3. Ask for slightly darker roots.

Like the idea of balayage, but want more of a blonde impact? If you’re getting a full head of highlights, having a darker toner applied at your roots will get rid of the line of demarcation the bleach leaves behind. As your hair hair grows, instead of seeing an obvious line, your highlights and natural color will blend together, letting you get away with a few more weeks between touch-ups.
