Extend the Life of Your Blowout

There’s nothing more confidence boosting than a fresh, bouncy salon blowout. But the cost, whether it’s in dollars or sore arms, can add up fast. So make your blowout last by following these simple tips to keep your hair looking fresh for a full five days (or more!).

Day 1: Shampoo, shampoo, shampoo

Extra clean hair is the foundation for any great blowout, so make sure your hair is squeaky clean. Since it’s been a while since your last shampoo, you may want to do the old “wash, rinse, repeat” routine to make sure that you get out all of the dirt and oil.

Hands off

As much as you might love running your hands through your hair, resist the urge. Touching your hair transfers oils from your hands onto your hair, attracting dirt and killing all of that fab volume.

Use scrunchies

Yes, you read that right. Sleeping on your hair can ruin the shape, so to preserve it wrap your hair into two Princess Leia buns and secure with scrunchies before you hit the sack. When you wake up in the morning you’ll have smooth waves without a dent in sight.

Day 2: Use a towel instead of a shower cap

Shower caps let moist, humid air in under the edges, causing frizz. Forgo the plastic cap and instead wrap your hair in a towel before getting into the shower to ensure your blowout stays intact.

Day 3: Revive volume with hairspray

By now your hair will be looking a little limp. Before you reach for the dry shampoo, which gives hair a matte texture, try using hairspray to boost volume and preserve shine. Flip your hair upside down, spray all over with hairspray, flip upright and voila! Fullness and shine.

Day 4: Time for dry shampoo

The fourth day after a blowout is when you start to see the grease creeping in at the root, which is the perfect time to bust out your trusty dry shampoo. Lift small sections of hair, and spray the roots, making sure to keep the can about three or four inches away from your head. Work it into the roots with your fingertips, tousle and go!

Day 5: Embrace the oil

On the final day, your hair will definitely be feeling dirty, which is the perfect time to embrace a chic updo. All of the extra grease will keep flyaways at bay, and dirty hair holds a style much better than clean hair. So pull your hair into a smooth bun or chignon, and give yourself a pat on the back for making your blowout last a full five days.
