6 Tips for Taking Care of Your Hair This Summer

Summertime, and the livin’ is easy. Trips to the beach, lounging in the sun, swimming in the pool. Unfortunately, the fun activities that fill summer days can wreck havoc on your hair, robbing it of shine, moisture and dulling your highlights. So here’s your guide to treating your hair to a little TLC this summer so you can have beautiful hair all season long.

1. Lay off the heat

No one enjoys blasting their head with a hairdryer when it’s 80 degrees out, so give your dryer, and your hair, a break! Summer is the perfect time to embrace your natural texture, and reducing the number of hot tools that you use will keep your hair healthy and strong.

2. Shampoo less

Spending time in the sun and swimming in pools and the ocean can cause some serious dryness. Washing your hair less often gives your natural oils a chance to hydrate your hair, and not styling it every day means you’ll save yourself a ton of time.

3. Embrace dry shampoo

On the days when you don’t wash, if you feel a little oily, spray a little dry shampoo onto your roots. Bumble and Bumble Prete-a-Powder will freshen and add some serious volume to your strands. Va va voom!

4. Try a smoothing serum

If the summertime humidity does less than flattering things to your hair, try using a smoothing serum, like Morroccan Oil Treatment. Smooth over damp hair to moisturize and keep frizz at bay.

5. Protect your hair from the pool

Your hair is a like a sponge, soaking up whatever comes its way, including chlorine. Chlorine build up can give hair a greenish tint, which affects all colors, but is especially noticeable on lighter hues. So before you dive into the pool, protect your hair by wetting it with tap water to reduce the amount of chlorine it absorbs. Post swim, try a clarifying shampoo like Bumble and Bumble Sunday Shampoo, which will help remove any build-up that can dull your strands.

6. Rock a sunhat

Many women shell out big bucks for their beautiful haircolor, but they may not realize that the sun can fade color and turn highlights brassy. Why not protect your investment by wearing a hat? From fedoras to wide-brim sunhats, there’s an option out there that’s sure to suit your style. This Panama hat from J.Crew is adorable.

No matter what plans are on your summer bucket list, there’s a way to have fun and keep your hair looking beautiful.
