Iconic Health: Lemon Water

I am into my second week of my bi-annual 3 week cleanse, and things are going great. One of the reason I love to do these cleanses is that it helps me to re-establish healthy habits that may have fallen to the wayside. One of these habits is starting my day with a tall glass of warm lemon water. Water is so important, but it is one of the most neglected aspects of our health and our diets. Below are some facts about water that I thought were important enough to share with you guys.

Human beings cannot exist without water. We can go without food for a few weeks, but only days without water.

Water accounts for 70 − 75% of our bodies composition

Water is the vehicle for enzymatic and chemical reactions, helping to transport nutrients, hormones, antibodies and oxygen through the blood and lymphatic system. Water helps to get rid of toxins in the body.

We lose one to two pints of water each day from exhaling alone – our lungs have to be moist to take in oxygen and release carbon dioxide….. and that’s before you exercise or have that after work martini!

So, how much water should you drink a day? The Mayo Clinic recommends 9 glasses a day for women and 13 glasses a day for men. That translates into about 4-5 regular sized Poland Springs bottles a day for women and about 6-7 bottles a day for men. That amount can/will vary depending on your own bio individual needs. Drink more if it’s hot, you are working out, if you are drinking alcohol, sweating ….etc. If you are one of those people that doesn’t really drink much water, start small and increase gradually.

I like to start my day off with a warm glass of lemon water. Starting your day this way;

*helps with digestion

*cleanses your system (lemons are a diuretic)

*boosts your immune system (Vitamin C)

*balances pH levels

*clears skin

*energizes/enhances mood

*freshens breath!

So, what are you waiting for? Grab a glass of water and start enjoying better health and digestion immediately!
